The Clearing part IIt was already early autumn, but that was impossible to know in Silver Lake, Oregon. There are no seasons in that town, nor in the entire city which surrounds it. The only marking of time was by the change in temperature. It was felt, not seen. In summer, the sun spat violent heat across desolate plains. Winter brought blinding snowstorms, ice on the roads, and a kind of cold that chilled a person right down to the eye sockets. He’s telling you to just talk, to let the words flow naturally and spill out of your mouth like drops of water.
You mentally correct his statement to say “drops of acid” instead. Every time you try to explain something to him a part of you is eaten away. He doesn’t seem to understand that when you clamp your mouth shut to keep the caustic words from pouring out you’re also doing him a favor. Corrosive sentences hold bias towards no one.
